Why this hotel stays with you: six insights through an architect’s lens

Conceived by artisan-designer @henrytimi and carefully restored under the direction of architect Angelo Zampolini, @nomoshotel is a place where every decision feels connected. Looking beyond its aesthetic reveals a series of thoughtful design decisions that shape the experience of the building in ways that aren’t always immediately obvious.

These are six insights that deepened my appreciation of Nomos hotel.

01 – Busy city, instant calm.
Rome is a city of movement. Yet inside Nomos, the pace slows down. Calm isn't created by chance, it's shaped through carefully considered decisions in light, proportion and materiality.

02 – Building with memory.
Long before Nomos, this building housed an 18th-century Franciscan monastery, where monks lived a life of simplicity, contemplation and ritual. That legacy remains embedded in its architecture today.

03 – More than a name.
In architecture, names can become part of the experience. Derived from the Greek word nomos, often translated as ‘order’, the hotel's name quietly echoes the rhythm and simplicity of its past.

04 – The stone that built Rome.
Quarried near Rome for over 2,000 years, travertine became the city's defining building material through its abundance, durability and longevity.

05 – The discipline of less.
Minimalism is the discipline of deciding what deserves to remain. Every element has a purpose, reducing visual noise and creating a greater sense of calm.

05 – Design for the senses.
Scent is part of the architecture. Volcanic stones throughout Nomos hold Henry Timi's custom fragrance, quietly shaping memory before conscious perception begins.
